I want a place to make things.

Not because I’m a professional woodworker.

Not because I’ve spent my whole life making furniture or throwing pottery or sewing my own clothes.

Actually, almost the opposite.

I’m someone who kept finding myself wanting to make things — to learn how to use tools, work with my hands, try something new, and have ideas that existed somewhere other than inside my head.

But there was always a barrier.

I didn’t have the tools.
I didn’t have the space.
I didn’t know where to start.
And I definitely didn’t want to buy an entire garage full of equipment just to find out whether I liked woodworking.

The more I looked around North County San Diego, the more I wondered:

Where do adults go when they want to become makers?

Not necessarily artists.
Not professional craftspeople.
Just people who want to learn how to make things.

That question became MADEHOUSE.

A place to learn skills. And then keep going.

MADEHOUSE is being created as a shared workshop, woodshop, classroom and creative community for adults in North County San Diego.

A place where you might walk in having never touched a table saw and take your first woodworking class.

Then another.

And eventually realize:

Wait. I can actually do this.

Maybe you start refinishing furniture. Learn to sew. Take a printmaking class. Build the bookshelf you've had saved on Pinterest for three years.

And when the class ends, you don't necessarily have to stop.

The larger vision for MADEHOUSE is a place where people can learn skills and have the space, tools and community to keep using them.

Because sometimes you don't need another hobby kit.

Sometimes you just want to make the damn table.

You don't have to already be creative.

I think a lot of people quietly believe creativity belongs to other people.

The artistic ones.

The handy ones.

The people who somehow already know what they're doing.

I don't believe that.

I think making is something humans naturally want to do.

We just don't always have somewhere for that instinct to go.

MADEHOUSE is for the curious person.

The beginner.

The person living in an apartment without a garage.

The person whose tools are currently scattered across a dining-room table.

The person with twelve saved project ideas and absolutely no idea where to start.

The person who wants to learn alongside other people instead of figuring everything out alone.

You don't need experience.

You just need something in you that says:

I'd like to try.

I'm building the place, not pretending to be the expert.

I'm Gena, the founder of MADEHOUSE.

And one of the things I want to be very clear about is that I'm learning, too.

I'm not opening MADEHOUSE because I believe I should personally teach every skill inside it.

I'm building it because I believe there are incredible makers, craftspeople and teachers in our community — and a whole lot of people who would love to learn from them.

My role is to create the container.

The space.

The tools.

The teachers.

The opportunities.

The permission to be a beginner.

And, hopefully, the kind of community where you walk in to make something and eventually realize you've found some of your people, too.

That's the part of this idea I can't stop thinking about.

MADEHOUSE is still being made.

Right now, MADEHOUSE is in its earliest stage.

I'm researching spaces, taking classes, learning about woodshops, talking with makers and instructors, studying what has worked in other creative spaces and, most importantly, talking to people in North County about what they would actually want from a place like this.

Some parts of the idea will change. Would you like to be involved?

They should.

I don't want to build a beautiful version of something nobody needs.

I want to build MADEHOUSE alongside the community that may eventually use it.

The vision is big.

A shared woodshop.
Skill-based classes.
Workspace for ongoing projects.
Tools you don't have to own yourself.
Storage.
Studios.
Gatherings.
A community of people making wildly different things under one roof.

But it starts much more simply.

With curiosity.

With conversations.

With learning.

With one person saying:

I've always wanted to try that.

And having somewhere to begin.
